The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) reminds motorists and pedestrians to make safety a top priority in and around school zones.
Whether traveling by vehicle or on foot, everyone plays a role in protecting children.
Stay alert, obey traffic laws and remain aware of your surroundings.
Driver Safety Reminders
- Slow down.
- Stop for school buses.
- Obey crossing guards.
- Watch for children.
- Yield at crosswalks.
- Keep crosswalks clear.

Pedestrian Safety Reminders
- Look both ways before crossing the street, even when using a crosswalk.
- Use marked crosswalks whenever available. Never assume drivers will stop.
- Stay on sidewalks or designated walkways whenever possible.
- Avoid walking in the roadway. Never enter traffic unexpectedly or walk in travel lanes.
- Be visible. Wear bright or reflective clothing when walking during low-light conditions.
