Motorists traveling throughout southern New Mexico should expect lane closures and reduced speeds in several work zones during the week of Aug. 2-9, with ongoing projects affecting Interstate 25, the Mesilla area, and portions of Las Cruces.
Drivers are reminded to slow down in construction zones, obey all posted traffic controls and watch for workers and heavy equipment. Double fines for speeding in work zones may apply.

Las Cruces & Mesilla
I-25 Guardrail Project (Las Cruces to Doña Ana)
Construction continues on Interstate 25 between mile markers 6 and 14.2, where crews are replacing guardrails and installing concrete barrier walls.
Traffic control and lane closures remain in place in both directions around the clock. Reduced speed limits are in effect. Crews are scheduled to work weekdays from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
NM 28 Northbound Closure
Motorists traveling through the Mesilla area should continue to expect delays.
The northbound driving lane and turn lane from NM 28 onto NM 101 (University Avenue) remain closed for roadway repairs. Drivers should follow posted detours. No reopening date has been announced.
University Avenue & Valley Drive
Signal improvements continue at the intersection of University Avenue (NM 101) and Valley Drive (NM 188).
Turning lanes may be closed while crews relocate pedestrian crosswalk push buttons. Work is expected to continue through Aug. 14, weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Lohman Avenue & Walnut Street
Outside lanes approaching the Lohman Avenue and Walnut Street intersection remain temporarily closed while roadway and traffic signal improvements are completed.
The closures are expected to remain in place through approximately Aug. 7.
Regional Travel
Interstate 25 – Cuchillo
Roadway reconstruction continues between mile markers 70 and 85 near Cuchillo. Lane closures and reduced speed limits should be expected while crews perform paving and guardrail work.
Interstate 25 – South of Socorro
Final work continues between mile markers 125 and 139 near San Antonio, where crews are installing rumble strips and pavement markings.
Columbus Port of Entry
Work continues on NM 11 north of the Port of Entry. Drivers may encounter flagging operations and reduced speeds while guardrails are installed.
Chaparral
The roadway widening project at NM 213 and NM 404 remains suspended because of construction issues. Work is expected to resume in mid- to late August.
Luna County
NMDOT continues chip seal operations on several roadways around Deming and western Luna County. Drivers should expect flagging crews, pilot vehicles, loose gravel and temporary stops while work progresses.
Traveling to El Paso?
Several Texas Department of Transportation projects will continue affecting travel along Interstate 10 this week.
Among the most significant closures:
- Eastbound I-10 at Anthony will close overnight on Aug. 3 and Aug. 5, with additional overnight closures beginning Aug. 10.
- Nightly full closures continue between Transmountain and Artcraft as bridge construction progresses.
- Various bypass lanes, entrance ramps and exit ramps between Mesa, Redd, Los Mochis and Transmountain may also be closed during scheduled construction periods.
Anyone planning to travel into El Paso should allow additional travel time and check Texas road conditions before departing.

Bonus: How to Follow a Pilot Vehicle
Road work on narrow state highways can often lead to traffic being reduced to one lane through the construction zone.
To help traffic move safely NMDOT will frequently use a pilot vehicle to guide travelers and ensure safety for our highway workers.
When a pilot car is being utilized in an area which has more than one side road accessing the construction area, it is very important to wait for the Pilot Car to pass by in the direction you want to travel.
Do not attempt to enter the roadway without first verifying what direction the pilot car is travelling as you could run head-on into oncoming traffic or injure the workers who is not expecting a vehicle from the other direction.
Slow down, follow the signs and make sure everyone gets home at the end of the day.
