State Continues Environmental Oversight at Former Gallup Refinery

Environmental oversight does not end when an industrial facility closes, according to the New Mexico Environment Department, which recently completed an inspection of the former Gallup Refinery to evaluate ongoing cleanup and monitoring efforts.

The department said inspectors from its Hazardous Waste Bureau and Compliance & Enforcement Division visited the site to review post-closure care, corrective action activities and compliance with hazardous waste regulations. The inspection was part of the state’s continuing oversight to help ensure remediation efforts remain effective and protective of surrounding communities and the environment.
