Law enforcement agencies across southern New Mexico are remembering Village of Hatch Police Officer José Ismael Chavez on the 10th anniversary of his death in the line of duty.
Chavez, 33, was killed while serving as a Hatch police officer on Aug. 12, 2016.
A decade later, Anthony Police Chief Aurora Hernandez remembered Chavez not simply as a fellow law enforcement officer, but as a former colleague and friend.
“10 years ago today, I lost a brother,” Hernandez wrote.
Hernandez worked alongside Chavez at the Hatch Police Department and recalled both his character and his dedication to the community he served.
“It’s hard to believe it has been 10 years,” Hernandez wrote. “Some people leave a lasting impression on you, and Chavez was one of those people.”
Her remembrance extended to Chavez’s family, friends and others who knew him.
“I’m grateful I had the opportunity to work alongside him and call him a friend,” Hernandez wrote.
Remembered Across the Law Enforcement Community
The Las Cruces Police Department also marked Wednesday’s anniversary, recalling the impact Chavez’s death had throughout the region.
“Ten years ago today was bitter for our law enforcement community,” LCPD wrote.
In the days following Chavez’s death, members of the community gathered along the roads as law enforcement officers and other first responders escorted him home.
Las Cruces Police remembered Chavez as a “loyal, dedicated and caring officer” who was cherished by the community he served.
Ten years later, the remembrances from Anthony and Las Cruces reflect how Chavez’s loss extended beyond a single department — and how his memory has remained with those who served alongside him and the communities they served.
“Rest easy, Chavez,” Hernandez wrote. “You are still missed, and you will never be forgotten.”
