The City of Sunland Park is marking International Youth Day by highlighting four programs that provide young people across Sunland Park, El Paso and southern New Mexico with opportunities to learn new skills, stay active and connect with mentors.
International Youth Day is recognized annually on Aug. 12. This year, Sunland Park used the occasion to draw attention to programs ranging from entrepreneurship and athletics to community service and agriculture.
Skateboarding and Mentorship
Founded by Luis “Dino” Loya in 2023, SK8 4KIDS provides free skateboarding lessons, equipment, mentorship and meals to young people in El Paso.
The nonprofit uses skateboarding as a way to encourage discipline and build community connections. High school participants can also complete community service hours by helping clean neighborhood skate parks and mentoring younger children.
Young Entrepreneurs
The Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico offers its Kids Can Jr. Vendor program for youth ages 6 to 17.
Participants work with adult mentors, attend business-development workshops and learn practical skills while creating handmade products they can sell at local markets.

Soccer in Sunland Park
Young athletes ages 5 to 14 can participate in training through Sun City FC at the Sunland Park Sports Complex, 4700 McNutt Road.
The soccer program provides structured team instruction along with specialized goalkeeper training. The first two training sessions are offered at no charge.

Growing Across Generations
At Sunland Park City Hall, the District 5 Community Garden brings youth volunteers together with senior mentors.
Led by Councilor Maria Burciaga in partnership with Border Voices, the year-round initiative introduces young participants to food systems, agricultural production and the sale of crops.

Together, the four programs illustrate different ways organizations across the region are creating opportunities for young people to develop skills, build relationships and become more involved in their communities.
