The New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum will open a new photography exhibition Saturday featuring images of farming and ranching from photographers across the El Paso del Norte region.

“Land & Legacy: Photographs from the Doña Ana Photography Club and the Photo Enthusiasts of El Paso” will open with an artists’ reception from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at the museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Road in Las Cruces.

The exhibition brings together photographs depicting the agricultural landscapes and traditions of the region.

The museum places the collection within a much longer history of agriculture and photography in New Mexico. Indigenous people began farming the land that is now New Mexico between 2,500 and 4,000 years ago. In the 19th century, photographer J.D. Riddle produced what the museum describes as the first known photographs of New Mexico farms and ranches.

More than 140 years later, members of the two regional photography clubs continue documenting the state’s crop and cattle lands through their own work.
