Motorists traveling through southern New Mexico and the El Paso area should expect several construction-related lane closures and traffic changes during the week of August 16–23, including continuing work on I-25, a closure affecting NM 28 near University Avenue and nighttime closures of I-10 near Artcraft.
The NMDOT District One Socorro Construction Team (Crew 4119) is making improvements along Interstate 25 near Williamsburg. This stretch of highway has been due for a refresh for years, and new funding is getting the job done.
Drivers are reminded to reduce speeds, obey posted signs and use caution around construction personnel and heavy equipment. Conditions may change without notice, and double fines for speeding may be in effect in work zones.
Las Cruces and Doña Ana County
I-25: Las Cruces to Doña Ana
The ongoing guardrail and concrete barrier project continues on I-25 between mile markers 6 and 14.2, from Las Cruces to just north of Doña Ana.
Lane closures and traffic control remain in place 24 hours a day in both directions as crews remove and replace guardrails and install concrete barrier walls.
Speed limits are reduced through the project area. Contractor working hours are 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
NM 28 at University Avenue
The northbound driving and turning lane on NM 28 to NM 101/University Avenue is closed for road repairs in the Mesilla area.
Motorists should expect delays, follow posted detours and use caution through the work zone. No estimated reopening time has been announced.
NM 213 and NM 404: Chaparral
The roadway reconstruction project on NM 213 and NM 404 between mile markers 0 and 2 remains suspended because of unforeseen issues affecting construction.
Work is expected to resume in late August.
Lohman Avenue and Walnut Street
Outside lanes approaching the intersection of Lohman Avenue and Walnut Street have been temporarily closed while crews perform roadway and signal improvements.
According to the current project schedule, those closures are expected to remain in place until approximately August 16.
I-25 North of Las Cruces
Truth or Consequences/Cuchillo
Road reconstruction continues on I-25 between mile markers 70 and 85 near Cuchillo.
Lane closures will affect both northbound and southbound traffic as crews conduct guardrail replacement, milling and paving operations.
Speed limits are reduced through the project. Work is scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with possible weekend work.
South of Socorro
Crews are finalizing reconstruction of I-25 between mile markers 125 and 139 near San Antonio.
Northbound and southbound lane closures will be in place for installation of rumble strips and pavement markings.
Work is scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with reduced speed limits through the project area.
Luna County
NMDOT crews continue chip seal work on roadways in the Deming area.
Drivers should expect flaggers, pilot vehicles and temporary stops. Loose gravel may remain on road surfaces for several days following treatment, and center striping may be absent until work is completed.
Crews are currently fog sealing:
- Various I-10 frontage roads in the Akela area
- NM 418 from mileposts 10 to 12, along Old Lordsburg Highway
Work is scheduled Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
El Paso Area
Borderland Expressway Phase 2
From Monday, August 17, through Friday, August 21, crews will work daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Drivers should expect:
- Alternating lane closures on US 54 eastbound and westbound between Mesquite Hills and McCombs
- Mesquite Hills reduced to one lane between US 54 and Red Man Drive
- Flaggers directing traffic as haul trucks cross Mesquite Hills
- Flaggers directing traffic as needed at McCombs and Stan Roberts
Crews will be transporting earth embankment into the project.
I-10 at Artcraft
A significant nighttime closure is scheduled for travelers using I-10 in west El Paso.
From Sunday, August 16, through Thursday, August 20, I-10 eastbound and westbound will be fully closed between Loop 375/Transmountain and Artcraft from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly.
Crews will be placing steel girders.
Another round of nighttime work begins Sunday, August 23, and continues through Thursday, August 27. Directional closures of eastbound and westbound I-10 between Transmountain and Artcraft are scheduled from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly while crews perform welding operations on the steel girders.

Drivers who may be affected by White Sands Missile Range road closures can call 575-678-1178 or 575-678-2222 for current closure information.
