The Mesilla Fire Department has already responded to more emergencies in 2026 than it did during all of last year, setting a new annual record while continuing to operate primarily with volunteer firefighters.
The department recently recorded its 1,222nd emergency response of the year, meaning every additional call through the remainder of 2026 will establish another record high.

The increase becomes particularly striking when viewed over a longer period.
According to the department, Mesilla Fire was averaging approximately 500 calls annually just five years ago.
Despite the growing workload, the department remains mostly volunteer.
Mesilla Fire described the milestone as a point of pride for the firefighters who continue answering those calls, noting that its current volume is comparable to that experienced by some paid departments.
“It’s a lot of work, but we do it for you,” the department said. “Thank you for the privilege of being able to help.”

Two Lieutenants Earn Their Red Helmets
The department also recently recognized two of its members for reaching another milestone.
Lieutenant/Paramedic Stephens and Lieutenant/Paramedic Ruiz received their red helmets after working primarily as Rescue Lieutenants during the past year while completing the fire certifications applicable to their positions.
Both also maintained their paramedic licenses while completing the additional training.
