Las Cruces Police are investigating a Friday afternoon shooting that injured a 36-year-old man near the intersection of Idaho Avenue and Luna Street.
Officers responded at about 2:50 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, following reports of two men firing at each other in the area. Police said officers arriving at the scene found evidence of gunfire, including several spent shell casings.
A 36-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds was located and transported to a local hospital for treatment. No information regarding his condition was included in the police update.

Several individuals were detained or were being interviewed as detectives worked to verify suspect information. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
The incident initially prompted police to close Luna Street and Idaho Avenue while officers investigated. Because the intersection is primarily within a residential neighborhood, police said the closure was expected to have minimal impact on through traffic.
Lynn Middle School was also temporarily placed under shelter-in-place status as a precaution during the police activity.
The shelter-in-place has since been lifted, and police reported that the intersection of Luna Street and Idaho Avenue has reopened.
No additional information about the circumstances of the shooting or potential suspects was available in the department’s latest update.
