New Mexico National Guard assists Department of Veterans’ Services at Military Honors Conference, Competition

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Members of the New Mexico Army National Guard assisted the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services today at the 17th Annual Military Honors Fall Training Conference & Competition at the New Mexico Veterans Memorial here.

Chief Warrant Officer 5 Dominic Esparza, the NMARNG’s Senior Human Resources Advisor, served as master of ceremonies for the event.

Sgt. Ivan Cano Rubio, the Noncommissioned Officer in Charge of the NMARNG’s Military Funeral Honors Program, provided an overview of the program to members of Veterans Service Organizations in attendance and laid out the ground rules for competition. He also served as a judge for the competition.

Sgt. Jacob Gonzales then explained how MFH members perform their duties for military burial ceremonies.

Spc. Jose Torres and Spc. Gael Uechi Solis demonstrated how to properly conduct a two-man fold and presentation of a U.S. flag to the next of kin.

Retired NMARNG Chief Warrant Officer 5 Sal Soto was also a judge for the competition.
