Motorists across Las Cruces and Doña Ana County will encounter several ongoing construction zones this week, while a significant traffic change begins in La Union as the Mendez Street Drainage Project moves into its next phase.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation advises motorists to reduce speed, obey posted signs and use caution around construction personnel and heavy equipment. Conditions may change without notice, and double fines for speeding may be in effect in work zones.

La Union: San Antonio Street Closure Begins
A significant traffic change is expected in La Union beginning the week of Aug. 31 as the Mendez Street Drainage Project moves into Phase 2.
Sentenario Street and Conejo Street will reopen, while San Antonio Street will close to through traffic for approximately two months.
Residents along San Antonio Street will continue to have access to their homes, and the existing construction detour will remain in place.
During Phase 1, crews installed storm drains and drainage inlets along Sentenario and Conejo streets. The project is intended to improve drainage in the La Union area.
Drivers should follow posted signs, use caution and allow additional travel time.

I-25: Las Cruces to Doña Ana
Guardrail and concrete barrier work continues on Interstate 25 between Las Cruces and just north of Doña Ana, from mile markers 6 to 14.2.
Traffic control and lane closures remain in place 24 hours a day in both directions as J-H Supply Company continues the project. Crews are currently installing concrete barrier wall.
Speed limits are reduced through the project area. Contractor working hours are Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Lohman Avenue and Walnut Street
Outside lanes approaching the intersection of Lohman Avenue and Walnut Street remain temporarily closed while roadway and signal improvements continue.
The closures are expected to remain in place until approximately Sept. 4.
Anthony: NM 184
NMDOT maintenance crews will perform roadway work on NM 184, or Country Club Road, between mile markers 0 and 1 in Anthony.
Work may affect both eastbound and westbound lanes as needed. Closures are scheduled Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. until approximately 3:30 p.m.
NM 26: Deming to Hatch
Daytime lane closures and pilot-car operations continue on NM 26 between Deming and Hatch as crews perform crack sealing, fog sealing and install centerline rumble strips.
Work begins at mile marker 0 near U.S. 180 and proceeds toward mile marker 46 in Hatch.
The centerline rumble strips are part of NMDOT’s Target Zero initiative and are intended to alert motorists who drift across the centerline.
Work is scheduled from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with possible weekend work.
NM 213 and NM 404: Chaparral
The roadway reconstruction project on NM 213 and NM 404 in Chaparral remains suspended.
Construction is expected to resume Sept. 21.
I-25: Truth or Consequences to Cuchillo
Road reconstruction continues on I-25 from mile markers 70 to 85, between Truth or Consequences and Cuchillo.
Lane closures are in place in both directions for guardrail replacement, milling and paving. Reduced speed limits remain in effect.
Work is scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with possible weekend work.
Luna County
NMDOT continues chip-seal operations in the Deming area, with crews currently fog sealing portions of:
- Various I-10 frontage roads in the Akela area
- NM 418, mileposts 10 to 12, along Old Lordsburg Highway
Drivers may encounter flaggers, pilot vehicles and temporary stops. Loose gravel may remain following treatment, and center striping may be absent until work is completed.
El Paso-Area Closures
TxDOT has several projects scheduled during the week.
On Monday, Aug. 31, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., South Desert at Transmountain will be fully closed for asphalt patch repair. Traffic will be detoured using Spur 16 to Isela Rubalcava.
For the Borderland Expressway Phase 2 project, alternate lane closures are scheduled on eastbound and westbound U.S. 54 between Mesquite Hills and McCombs from Monday, Aug. 31, through Thursday, Sept. 3, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Mesquite Hills will also be reduced to one lane between U.S. 54 and Red Man Drive. Flaggers will direct traffic as needed for haul trucks.
Additional flagging operations are planned at McCombs and Stan Roberts from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
White Sands Missile Range
Motorists traveling through the White Sands Missile Range area should be prepared for possible road closures.
