New Mexico Department of Justice CGIC Unit Generates Case-Breaking Lead in Roswell Murder Investigations

Roswell, NM – The New Mexico Department of Justice (NMDOJ) Crime Gun Intelligence Center Unit (CGIC), in its mission to connect crimes involving firearms across the state, has generated a critical lead in a Roswell case this week – resulting in the arrest of a man accused of murdering at least two people in the area.

Sean Michael Caraska, 37, was arrested by the Roswell Police Department this week and charged with two counts of First-Degree Murder after a search warrant executed at his home identified a firearm that was connected to the murders of 46-year-old Andrew Lujan-Huerta and 59-year-old Karl Affsprung.

The NMDOJ’s CGIC Unit uses the statewide National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) and its machines to analyze bullet casings and identify firearms connected with violent crimes across the state. The CGIC, announced in December, is the first to be housed within an attorney general’s office in the country. The network has grown steadily and to date has entered over 700 firearms into NIBIN. By early winter, that number is expected to approach 2,000.
