The New Mexico Film Office recently marked the 20th anniversary of Spaceport America by highlighting its use as a filming location for movies, television and documentary productions.

Among them is The Space Between Us, the 2017 science-fiction film that used Spaceport America to help portray a decidedly more distant destination: Mars.
More recently, the facility has appeared in the horror film HIM, Netflix’s Air Force Elite: Thunderbirds and AMC’s Ride with Norman Reedus.
The attraction isn’t difficult to see. Built specifically as a commercial spaceport, the facility offers filmmakers something that would otherwise have to be constructed or digitally created: a futuristic-looking aerospace complex sitting in the middle of the New Mexico desert.
That cinematic side of Spaceport America isn’t entirely incidental. As far back as 2016, spaceport officials were discussing film and photography shoots as part of an effort to diversify use of the facility beyond its primary aerospace mission.
Twenty years after Spaceport America’s beginnings, launches remain its defining purpose. But for audiences around the world, their occasional glimpse of southern New Mexico may have come without a rocket ever leaving the ground.
