SANTA FE — New Mexico communities will come together this September for more than 30 events across 20 counties, connecting people with recovery resources and support as part of Recovery Awareness Month.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has proclaimed September 2026 as Recovery Month in New Mexico, honoring individuals in recovery and the people, families, professionals, peer support workers, advocates, and communities that make recovery possible every day.

The statewide effort comes as New Mexico continues to expand access to behavioral health, substance use treatment, overdose prevention and crisis services. Since launching in 2022, New Mexico’s 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline has handled more than 281,000 calls, texts, and chats from people seeking support.
“Recovery is built every day through families, peers, providers, and community partners who show up for one another,” said Nick Boukas, director of the Behavioral Health Services Division at the New Mexico Health Care Authority. “During Recovery Month, we’re reminded that healing isn’t something people have to navigate alone and every person knows that help is here when they need it.”
This year’s Recovery Month theme, “Stronger Together,” highlights the role communities play in preventing overdose, supporting recovery and promoting mental wellness. New Mexico communities will host more than 30 events across 20 counties including bike rides, car shows, music, traditional dances, cultural celebrations, and more. A full listing of events is available through Recovery Communities of New Mexico at rconm.org/events.
Recovery Month follows International Overdose Awareness Day on Aug. 31 and includes several key dates focused on overdose and suicide prevention:
- Aug. 31: International Overdose Awareness Day honors people lost to overdose and raises awareness about overdose prevention. New Mexicans can find naloxone, overdose prevention tools and treatment resources at DoseofReality.com.
- Sept. 8: 988 Day raises awareness of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and connects New Mexicans with crisis support.
- Sept. 10: World Suicide Prevention Day raises awareness about suicide prevention and encourages people to seek help and support.
