Las Cruces, New Mexico (October 17) — Las Cruces audiences are invited to a special live event at the Rio Grande Theater featuring a screening of the award-winning documentary THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED: The Story of Don McLean’s ‘American Pie. Taking place October 17th at 7:00 PM. The evening will bring the film’s music and storytelling to life with live music, a special introduction from singer/songwriter Don McLean, and a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers following the screening. The event is being hosted by the Las Cruces International Film Festival.

Presented by LCIFF as an immersive experience for music lovers and documentary fans alike, the program will pair the documentary’s compelling narrative with onstage performances before transitioning to a guided discussion where attendees can hear firsthand insights into the film’s creation and the enduring cultural impact of American Pie.

Unique among music documentaries, THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED goes far deeper than exploring an artist’s career, but takes an in-depth, cinematic look at the inspiration, creation, and influence of “American Pie,” and the way McLean’s song has become a touchstone that continues to inspire artists and music lovers today. The film reveals the secrets and meanings behind McLean’s astonishing lyrics, and their influence in the past, today, and into the future.
Called “mandatory viewing for McLean fans or anyone who has marveled at his sonic treasure” by the Associated Press, THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED “provides invaluable context to one of the most enduring and original pieces of pop music ever composed” (Chicago Sun-Times,Richard Roeper). Music bible Billboard says THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED “will delight the song’s fans … neither the song nor McLean, have lost any of their potency a half-century later.”
THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED: The Story of Don McLean’s ‘American Pie’ is produced by Spencer Proffer, whose career as a music producer has spanned decades and included some of the most iconic acts in rock history. Proffer and his production company Meteor 17 bring dazzling audiovisual storytelling techniques to the film, reimagining the music for a modern audience. Proffer will be in attendance in Las Cruces for this special screening.
The news release announcing the screening lists tickets at $30/$60 VIP and directs buyers to the Las Cruces International Film Festival website. As of Saturday, Sept. 5, the screening was not listed on the festival’s website. Tickets are currently listed through Eventbrite for $39.19/$76.54 VIP.
