Soccer: NM State Closes Stint in Hawaii with Loss to Utah Valley

The Aggies return to the mainland for a home matchup with rival New Mexico on Saturday, Sept. 12.

HONOLULU – On Sunday night, NM State played its final match of the OUTRIGGER No Ka Oi, taking on the Utah Valley Wolverines at UH Lower Campus Field in Honolulu. This marked the first meeting between the two teams since the 2022 season, when the Aggies earned their first-ever WAC Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament under Head Coach Rob Baarts. This matchup, however, would go the way of the Wolverines, as NM State fell by a final score of 4-0.

Senior and UTRGV transfer Emilia Compian made her first start for the Aggies, tallying her first game action since the season opener against Arizona State on Aug. 12. The Mesquite, Texas, native was tested early by the Wolverines, who got a shot off in the fifth minute – one of eight total in the first half for Utah Valley. Just minutes later, a ball by the Wolverines would find the back of the net.

Freshman forward Filucca Daugaard attempted to even the score with a shot in the 18^th minute, breaking free of the Wolverine backline to challenge UVU goalkeeper Madeleine Boucher, though she was able to knock the ball away and deny the goal-scoring opportunity. Fellow freshman Zoey Gist found another scoring chance in the 25^th minute, making a run across the far side of the field and past the Utah Valley backline, but was unable to find the back of the net.
 
At halftime, NM State trailed the Wolverines 2-0, while possessing disadvantages in shots (8-2), shots on goal (3-2) and corner kicks (5-1).
 
 A pair of second-half goals for Utah Valley saw the Aggies fall by a final score of 4-0.
 
Gabi Hislop recorded her first shot of the season, while completing her fifth consecutive game with a full 90 minutes. Esme Arenas tallied a shot in Sunday’s contest, marking her first instance of shots recorded in back-to-back games this season.
 
Fellow backline member Kennedy Herrera tallied a shot for the second consecutive game, while posting her sixth straight 90-minute match.
