Drivers across Las Cruces and southern New Mexico should prepare for intermittent lane closures at Lohman Avenue and Walnut Street this week, while continuing construction will affect I-25, NM 26 and several routes farther south.
Motorists traveling toward Santa Teresa and El Paso should also watch for work along McNutt Road and extensive daytime and nighttime construction along I-10.
Drivers are reminded to reduce speeds, obey posted signs and use caution around construction personnel and heavy equipment. Conditions may change without notice, and double fines for speeding may be in effect in work zones.
Las Cruces and Doña Ana County
Lohman Avenue and Walnut Street
Intermittent lane closures are scheduled along Lohman Avenue near Walnut Street from Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Friday, Sept. 11.
Crews will continue roadway and signal improvements at the intersection.
I-25: Las Cruces to Doña Ana
Guardrail and concrete barrier work continues along I-25 between mile markers 6 and 14.2, from Las Cruces to just north of Doña Ana.
Traffic control and lane closures remain in place 24 hours a day in both directions for guardrail removal and replacement. Crews are currently installing concrete barrier walls.
Speed limits are reduced through the project area. Contractor working hours are 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Sunland Park and Santa Teresa
NM 273/McNutt Road
A roadway rehabilitation project is beginning along NM 273/McNutt Road, extending from the Texas state line to mile marker 6, approximately one mile south of Santa Teresa.
Work will affect both northbound and southbound lanes, with reduced speed limits throughout the project area.
Contractor working hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
The NMDOT District One Hatch Patrol has been putting in the work along NM 185, tackling potholes, completing shoulder work, and blade patching larger areas of roadway that need a little extra attention. Their hard work helps maintain the roadway and provides a safer, smoother drive for everyone traveling through the Hatch area.
Deming to Hatch
NM 26
Drivers traveling between Deming and Hatch should expect daytime lane closures and pilot-car operations along NM 26 from US 180 near Deming toward mile marker 46 in Hatch.
Crews are performing crack sealing, fog sealing and installing centerline rumble strips.
Work is scheduled from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with possible weekend work.
NMDOT says the centerline rumble strips are part of its Target Zero initiative and are intended to alert motorists who drift across the centerline, helping reduce head-on and crossover crashes.
Luna County
Chip seal operations continue on roads in the Deming area.
Drivers should expect flaggers, pilot vehicles and temporary stops. Loose gravel may remain on road surfaces for several days after treatment, and center striping may be absent until work is completed.
Crews are currently fog sealing:
- Various I-10 frontage roads in the Akela area
- NM 418 between mileposts 10 and 12, along Old Lordsburg Highway
Work is scheduled Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
I-25 Near Truth or Consequences
Road reconstruction continues along I-25 between mile markers 70 and 85 near Cuchillo.
Lane closures will affect northbound and southbound traffic as crews perform guardrail replacement, milling and paving.
Speed limits are reduced through the project area. Work is scheduled 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with possible weekend work.
Traveling to El Paso
I-10 Widening West: Phase 1
From Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Friday, Sept. 11, as-needed lane closures are scheduled daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Drivers should expect alternating closures affecting:
- I-10 eastbound and westbound between Los Mochis and Mesa
- North and South Desert between Los Mochis and Mesa
- Entrance ramps, exit ramps and U-turns in the Los Mochis area
I-10 Widening West: Phase 2
Additional work is scheduled Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Saturday, Sept. 12, as needed, with operations during both daytime and nighttime hours.
Drivers should expect alternating lane closures on I-10 eastbound and westbound between Anthony and Mesa, as well as North and South Desert between Anthony and Mesa.
Crews will be conducting dirt work and miscellaneous removals.
Bypass closures also remain in effect:
- I-10 westbound bypass lanes between Mesa and Redd are closed. Traffic will continue along North Desert, through the Thorn intersection, and reenter I-10 before Redd.
- I-10 eastbound bypass lanes between Redd and Mesa are closed. Traffic will continue along South Desert, through the Thorn intersection, and reenter I-10 before Mesa.
Crews are completing landscaping in the area.
Borderland Expressway
From Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Friday, Sept. 11, alternating lane closures are scheduled on US 54 eastbound and westbound between Mesquite Hills and McCombs.
Mesquite Hills will be reduced to one lane between US 54 and Red Man Drive, with flaggers directing traffic as needed for haul trucks.
Additional flagging operations are planned at McCombs and Stan Roberts.
Crews will be performing bridge work and transporting earth embankment into the project.
Coming Sept. 21: Chaparral
Road reconstruction on NM 213 and NM 404 is scheduled to resume Monday, Sept. 21, beginning a first phase expected to continue for approximately eight months, through April or May 2027.
During Phase 1, crews will work on the west frontage road of NM 213, construct temporary detour pavement between the new bypass route and NM 404, and begin construction of the flyover.
Regular work hours are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, although longer hours and weekend work are possible.
NMDOT expects the entire project to take approximately 21 months, continuing through summer 2028.
