Stay Safe: Watch for Bears on New Mexico Roads

Over the last few weeks, several bears have been struck by vehicles on New Mexico roadways, including four bears hit on I-25 near Bernalillo in just the past two weeks.

It’s a heartbreaking reminder that wildlife is moving through the same places we travel every day. Our roads cross their habitat and a little extra caution can make a big difference for wildlife and for everyone on the road.

A few tips:

• Slow down and follow posted speed limits, especially when wildlife is nearby.
• Bears are active day and night and can cross roads at any time as they search for food, making it important for drivers to keep an eye on the roadway and shoulders.
• Put distractions away and give yourself plenty of room to brake.
• If an animal enters the roadway, brake while maintaining control and stay in your lane. Sudden swerving can cause a serious crash.

If you are involved in an accident, prioritize your safety by pulling over to a safe location and contacting law enforcement to report the accident.
