Students, first responders and community members gathered at Mayfield High School Thursday to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The school’s annual remembrance ceremony brought together Mayfield Air Force Junior ROTC cadets, law enforcement officers, firefighters, district leaders, members of the Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education and members of the community.
The Las Cruces Police and Fire departments participated in the presentation of the colors, while Mayfield JROTC cadets raised the flags before lowering them to half-staff in remembrance of those who died and those whose lives were changed by the attacks.
The ceremony gave a new generation of Las Cruces students — most born years after Sept. 11, 2001 — an opportunity to take part in a community tradition of remembrance 25 years later.
