Las Cruces, Sunland Park First Responders Mark 25 Years Since 9/11

First responders and community members in Las Cruces and Sunland Park marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks Thursday with tributes remembering those who died and the emergency personnel who responded.

At Aggie Memorial Stadium, members of the Las Cruces Fire and Police departments joined NMSU Fire, NMSU Police and NMSU Army ROTC for the annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.

Participants climbed the stadium stairs in remembrance of the lives lost and the first responders who died during the attacks.

In Sunland Park, the city marked the anniversary by remembering the 2,977 people who died on Sept. 11, including 343 members of the New York City Fire Department.

“Twenty-five years later, we honor their courage, sacrifice, and the loved ones who continue to carry their memory,” the Sunland Park Fire Department wrote. “Their service reminds us of the responsibility behind every call, every uniform, and every act of service to our community.”

The observances were among several held across our broader community Thursday as southern New Mexico marked a quarter-century since the attacks.
