A fallen tree blocking Walnut Grove Road in Garfield brought a Doña Ana County Roads Department crew out in the middle of the night Wednesday.
The department received an emergency call at approximately 12:51 a.m. Sept. 10 reporting the obstruction. Rather than waiting for the morning shift, a road crew responded to clear the roadway.
Workers used a winch with a 12,000-pound capacity mounted to the front of a County pickup truck to pull the fallen tree from the road.

The late-night response offered a glimpse at one of the less-visible jobs handled by County road crews, which can be called out after regular working hours when fallen trees and other hazards make roads unsafe or impassable.
Once the tree was removed, Walnut Grove Road was cleared for traffic.
