Rain and high winds brought down a tree onto a Sunland Park home Wednesday as storms moved through southern Doña Ana County.
Sunland Park Fire Department crews responded to the 100 block of Piñon Drive, where the fallen tree had landed on a residential structure.
Firefighters cut the tree into smaller sections before safely removing it from the home. The department did not report any injuries in its account of the response.
The incident came as the National Weather Service office in Santa Teresa maintained a Flood Watch across much of southwest New Mexico, including Sunland Park, Las Cruces and other communities in Doña Ana County.
Forecasters said abundant moisture was producing scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms Wednesday night. Some areas west of the Rio Grande had already received between one-half inch and 2 inches of rain over recent days, increasing the potential for additional rainfall to produce flash flooding.
Localized rainfall totals of another 1 to 2 inches remained possible with stronger storms or where storms repeatedly moved across the same area.
The Flood Watch remained in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday. The National Weather Service warned that excessive runoff could flood low-lying areas, urban drainage areas and low-water crossings.
