A Las Cruces man’s attempted bank robbery in Deming was among five cases highlighted Friday in the FBI’s national “Violent Crime Case Round-Up.”

Zachary Michael Clay, 42, was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison after attempting to rob First New Mexico Bank in Deming while armed with a hatchet.
The FBI included Clay’s case in its Sept. 18 weekly roundup alongside cases from Virginia, Washington, South Dakota and Texas involving investigations ranging from bank robbery and violent crime to a decades-old disappearance and online child exploitation.
Las Cruces Digest reported Clay’s sentencing earlier this week.
According to court records cited by the FBI, Clay entered the Deming bank Feb. 26 with a hatchet around his waist and handed a teller a handwritten note demanding large bills.
After the teller walked away under the pretense of retrieving money, another employee called 911. Clay subsequently approached another teller and the bank’s assistant vice president, displaying the hatchet during the attempted robbery.
Clay left the bank without obtaining any money after hearing approaching sirens and was arrested by Luna County Sheriff’s Office deputies as he exited.
The FBI publishes its Violent Crime Case Round-Up as a partial weekly collection of cases involving its field offices and law enforcement partners. The agency’s broader violent-crime work includes bank robbery, gangs and criminal organizations, crimes against children, human trafficking and crimes in Indian Country.
