Disc Golf Tournament Finds a Temporary Home Along the Pecos River

A stretch of public land along the Pecos River became a disc golf course Saturday as the Bureau of Land Management hosted its inaugural Pecos Diamond Disc Golf Classic near Roswell.

The Sept. 19 tournament was held at the BLM’s Oxbow Day Use Area, about seven miles east of Roswell.

Organizers created a temporary nine-basket course covering approximately a mile through the recreation area. Participants played the nine holes twice during the tournament, effectively making an 18-hole round from the pop-up course.

The event also introduced another recreational use for the relatively new Oxbow Day Use Area. The 240-acre property sits alongside the Pecos River and is being developed as a location for a variety of outdoor recreation activities.

BLM Outdoor Recreation Planner Blake Ingram said before the tournament that the event would give local disc golf players an opportunity to try a new setting while becoming familiar with the agency’s newest day-use area.

Following Saturday’s tournament, the BLM said additional events are planned for the Oxbow Day Use Area.
