New Mexico National Guard Prepared to Support Flood Response Amid Heavy Rain

SANTA FE, N.M. — The New Mexico National Guard has positioned personnel, high-water vehicles and aviation assets to rapidly support local and state agencies if requested as heavy rainfall creates the potential for flooding in areas across New Mexico Tuesday evening.

In Ruidoso, one Community Emergency Response Team is staged with two high-water vehicles and prepared to respond if requested by local authorities.

In October, 2022, the New Mexico National Guard, working with county and state agencies responding to extreme flooding in and around Roswell, has rescued over 300 people.

A second team with two high-water vehicles is staged in Las Vegas as an additional response capability.

New Mexico National Guard major subordinate commands have also identified additional personnel who can be activated if needed as conditions develop.

The New Mexico National Guard’s aviation unit has prepared two aircraft for potential response operations and identified aircrews and supporting personnel who can be called upon if required.

As of Tuesday evening, the New Mexico National Guard has not been requested to deploy these assets.

In July, 2024, the New Mexico National Guard, including Soldiers from the 920th Engineering Company, conducted flood rescue operations during the flash floods in Ruidoso.

Guard personnel remain prepared to respond in support of civil authorities should assistance be requested.

The New Mexico National Guard continues to monitor conditions and coordinate with state and local partners as heavy rainfall moves through the state.
