This isn’t just a place to stretch your legs! The rest area offers incredible views, restrooms, shaded picnic tables and a dog-walking area. And don’t miss one of New Mexico’s coolest and quirkiest roadside attractions, a larger-than-life roadrunner constructed entirely from recycled materials and discarded items! Update posted Sunday, October 4 (via Facebook): The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) announces that US 60 has reopened to passenger vehicles and approved weighted trucks following ongoing repair work on the bridge. At this time, oversized and overweight commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) are not permitted to use the bridge. These restrictions will remain in place until further notice as repair work continues.
US 60 Closed Between Socorro and Magdalena
US 60 remains closed between Socorro and Magdalena after heavy rainfall and flooding caused severe damage near a bridge (see above).
According to NMDOT, floodwaters significantly eroded the embankment supporting Bridge 6358, leaving the structure in a vulnerable condition.
The highway will remain closed at the bridge while necessary repairs are made. NMDOT did not provide an estimated reopening date in its weekly report.
Crews made significant progress Friday as they continued working to reopen US 60 between Socorro and Magdalena. Teams brought in backfill and large rock to rebuild areas that were eroded by recent water flow. Large rocks were also being strategically placed to help protect the roadway if additional water comes down the canyon. The material is being placed in layers and properly compacted to help ensure a strong, stable footing as reconstruction continues. Crews are working hard to get US 60 fully reopened as safely and efficiently as possible. At the time of this posting, no reopening date was announced, but please see above for the latest update. Travelers planning to use US 60 through the area should plan accordingly.
