NSF Railway has attributed Tuesday morning’s train derailment near Leasburg to extreme flooding, confirming that multiple railcars carrying flaxseed derailed without reported injuries to the train crew or involvement of hazardous materials.
The derailment occurred at approximately 4 a.m. Mountain Time on October 20, according to a statement from BNSF spokesperson Kendall Sloan published Wednesday by KRWG Public Media.

“BNSF personnel are on site working to clear the incident as quickly and as safely as possible,” Sloan stated.

BNSF anticipates restoring rail service by midday Thursday, October 22. However, Doña Ana County’s projected reopening of Doña Ana Road remains Friday afternoon, October 23, pending completion of cleanup efforts.
County officials continue to advise motorists to avoid the affected roadway and use alternate routes.
BNSF did not specify how many railcars derailed, whether any flaxseed was spilled or the extent of damage to railroad infrastructure.
The railroad’s statement was reported by KRWG Public Media.
