LAS CRUCES — The New Mexico State University Fire Department combined emergency response training with a little Halloween fun during its 2026 Halloween Howl activities, giving firefighters and visitors an opportunity to get an up-close look at an emergency medical helicopter.
The department conducted helicopter landing zone training with assistance from Native Air and the El Paso Fire Department’s Fire Star 1 helicopter. The exercise continued despite Native Air 31 being called away on a mission.
Landing zone training helps emergency responders prepare for situations requiring helicopter support, including establishing safe areas for aircraft to land and coordinating with flight crews during emergency operations.
With the training completed, the occasion also provided a lighter moment as Sparky, the fire safety mascot, and other participants were invited aboard one of the helicopters for a closer look.
