FARMINGTON, N.M. — Soldiers of the New Mexico Army National Guard’s Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 226th Military Police Battalion, were honored during a Yellow Ribbon Deployment Ceremony at the Farmington Civic Center on Nov. 2, 2026, as they prepare to deploy to Eastern Europe in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve.
The Soldiers will conduct military police and security operations as part of the U.S. military’s continued commitment to regional security and cooperation with NATO allies and partners in Europe.
The ceremony brought together Soldiers, families, military leaders, local officials and community members to recognize the deploying unit’s service and sacrifice while reaffirming the New Mexico National Guard’s commitment to supporting military families throughout the deployment.
Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar, the adjutant general of New Mexico and acting secretary of the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, joined Farmington Mayor Nate Duckett and Lt. Col. Sergio Esparza, commander of the deploying battalion, in recognizing the Soldiers and their families.
“These deploying Soldiers represent the very heart of our Citizen-Soldier legacy — stepping up for their neighbors during emergencies across New Mexico one day, and answering our nation’s call overseas the next,” Aguilar said. “While our Guard continues to respond to severe flooding across the state, this headquarters is taking that same dedication to their federal mission abroad. I want every Soldier and family member to know they are not alone. The strength of our National Guard comes from the families, employers, and communities who stand behind them, and we will have their backs here at home until every Soldier returns safely.”

The ceremony underscored the important role families play in military service, particularly during extended deployments when loved ones must manage the challenges of separation while maintaining responsibilities at home.
Through its Family Programs and the Department of Defense Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program, the New Mexico National Guard provides resources, information and assistance to Soldiers and their families before, during and after deployments.
A highlight of the ceremony was the symbolic tying of yellow ribbons to a tree by Esparza and Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Yardman, representing the deploying Soldiers and their families.
The ribbons will remain in place until the Soldiers safely return home.
The yellow ribbon has long served as a symbol of remembrance, hope and support for deployed American service members. Its widespread use during the Iran hostage crisis and subsequent military operations helped establish it as an enduring expression of the nation's commitment to those serving far from home.
For the Soldiers of the 226th Military Police Battalion, the ceremony marked an important milestone as they prepare to leave their families, civilian careers and communities to answer the nation's call to service.
The event also highlighted the strong relationship between the New Mexico National Guard and the Farmington community.
Organizers recognized Duckett, city officials and community partners for their assistance in hosting the ceremony and supporting the deploying Soldiers.
Operation Atlantic Resolve demonstrates the United States' continued commitment to European security through military cooperation, training and operations alongside NATO allies and partners.
As the Soldiers of the 226th Military Police Battalion prepare for their overseas mission, the New Mexico National Guard remains committed to ensuring their families have the resources and support they need throughout the deployment.
The ceremony concluded with a benediction and the playing of the Army song, sending the Soldiers forward with the gratitude, encouragement and support of their fellow New Mexicans.
