As temperatures in southern New Mexico continue to swing between seasonal extremes, the City of Las Cruces is offering assistance to help some residents keep their homes comfortable year-round—at little to no cost.

Through its Plugged In for Good program, the City’s Sustainability Office is providing qualifying low-income homeowners with free energy audits and home upgrades, including improvements to heating and cooling systems. The program is currently accepting applications through April 30.

City officials say the effort is aimed at addressing both rising energy costs and the increasing strain that extreme weather can place on older homes.

The program offers a range of improvements designed to increase energy efficiency, including sealing drafts around doors and windows, upgrading insulation, and installing modern heating and cooling systems. For homeowners who qualify, those upgrades are covered through grant funding during the program’s pilot phase.

According to the City, the goal is not only to reduce monthly utility costs, but also to improve overall home safety and long-term livability—particularly for residents in houses with aging systems that struggle to keep up with seasonal temperature swings.

The initiative is part of a broader push by the City’s Sustainability Office to balance economic and environmental priorities, while helping residents adapt to changing conditions. Local officials note that Las Cruces faces increasingly hot summers and colder winter extremes, making energy efficiency improvements more important for maintaining safe indoor temperatures.

To be eligible, applicants must own a home within Las Cruces city limits and meet low-income guidelines based on state or federal criteria.

Residents interested in applying or learning more about the program can contact the City’s Sustainability Office at (575) 541-2175 or by email at sustainability@lascruces.gov.
