During the investigation, officers contacted witnesses who had stopped at the scene and located a 2013 BMW displaying significant driver-side damage consistent with damage observed on the motorcycle. The driver of the BMW was identified as Danny Sanchez (58). The preliminary investigation indicates that both the BMW and the motorcycle were traveling northbound on Interstate 25. For reasons still under investigation, the BMW struck the motorcycle from behind. The impact caused Thomas to be ejected from the motorcycle. The BMW continued traveling until Sanchez realized the vehicle was inoperable and pulled over on the right shoulder.

Thomas later succumbed to his injuries sustained in the crash.

Sanchez was charged with homicide by vehicle, aggravated DWI, and careless driving. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in this crash.

This investigation remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police with assistance from the Vehicular Crimes Unit.
