LAS CRUCES, N.M. – As planning continues for a new grades 6-12 school expected to open in Fall 2027, Las Cruces Public Schools is asking students, families, employees and community members to help shape the school’s mission, educational priorities and overall identity through a public survey.
According to an announcement by Samantha Lewis of Las Cruces Public Schools, the district envisions the new campus as a smaller learning community designed to support students throughout their educational journey by serving grades 6 through 12 under one roof. District officials say the model is intended to eliminate the traditional transition between middle and high school while fostering stronger relationships, a greater sense of community and expanded opportunities for student success.

Rather than focusing solely on the design of the campus, the survey asks participants to consider what the school’s educational mission should be. Among the questions are what the primary purpose of a 6-12 school should be, what educational opportunities it should provide and what values and experiences should define the learning environment.
The district is also seeking feedback on several educational priorities, including college preparation, Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways, early college and career exploration, personalized learning opportunities, social-emotional development, student belonging and strategies for creating a safe and supportive school environment.
District officials said responses will help guide the school’s mission, vision and educational experience as planning continues. Additional community meetings and focus groups are expected this fall to gather more in-depth public input before the school opens in 2027.
