Anthony NM Police Join El Paso in Remembering Victims of August 3, 2019

For Anthony, New Mexico, the anniversary is not simply the remembrance of a tragedy that occurred in a neighboring city.

Seven years after a gunman opened fire at an El Paso Walmart, the Anthony Police Department joined communities throughout the region in remembering the 23 people who lost their lives in the August 3, 2019 attack.

“Today, the Anthony Police Department joins our entire border community in remembering the 23 lives lost on August 3, 2019,” the department said in a remembrance shared with the community.

“Seven years later, we continue to honor the victims, their families, the survivors, the first responders, and everyone whose life was forever changed by that tragic day.”

Remembering August 3

On the morning of August 3, 2019, a gunman attacked shoppers at the Cielo Vista Walmart in El Paso, killing 23 people and injuring 22 others.

Federal prosecutors later established that the attack was motivated by hatred toward Hispanics. The gunman admitted that he selected El Paso as his target and intended to kill the people he shot because of their perceived race and national origin.

The attack became one of the deadliest acts of violence in El Paso’s history and left an enduring mark on communities throughout the region.

The gunman pleaded guilty in 2023 to 90 federal hate-crime and firearms charges and was sentenced to 90 consecutive life sentences in federal prison.

A Remembrance Shared Across Communities

For Anthony, New Mexico, the anniversary is not simply the remembrance of a tragedy that occurred in a neighboring city.

Communities throughout southern New Mexico and El Paso are connected by families, schools, workplaces, businesses and the thousands of people who travel throughout the region as part of their everyday lives.

“Our communities are deeply connected, and today we stand alongside El Paso in remembrance, unity, and strength,” the Anthony Police Department said.

“We will never forget.”
