Drivers across Las Cruces and southern New Mexico should prepare for continuing construction and lane closures during the week of September 13–20, including work at Lohman Avenue and Walnut Street, along I-25 and on McNutt Road near Sunland Park and Santa Teresa.
Travelers heading toward El Paso should also watch for nighttime closures along North and South Desert and continuing work associated with the Borderland Expressway.
NMDOT District One was recently invited to Career Day at Socorro High School. This gave us the opportunity to meet with students, share the work we do, and highlight the wide range of career paths available in the transportation industry—from engineering and construction to maintenance, finance, communications, and more. Events like this play an important role in helping students explore career options, ask questions, and consider their future goals.
Drivers are reminded to reduce speeds, obey posted signs and use caution around construction personnel and heavy equipment. Conditions may change without notice, and double fines for speeding may be in effect in work zones.
Las Cruces and Doña Ana County
Lohman Avenue and Walnut Street
Intermittent lane closures will continue along Lohman Avenue near Walnut Street through Friday, Sept. 18.
Crews are performing roadway and signal improvements at the intersection.
I-25: Las Cruces to Doña Ana
Guardrail and concrete barrier work continues along I-25 between mile markers 6 and 14.2, from Las Cruces to just north of Doña Ana.
Traffic control and lane closures remain in place 24 hours a day in both directions for guardrail removal and replacement. Crews are currently installing concrete barrier walls.
Speed limits are reduced through the project area. Contractor working hours are 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Sunland Park and Santa Teresa
NM 273/McNutt Road
Roadway rehabilitation continues along NM 273/McNutt Road, extending from the Texas state line to mile marker 6, approximately one mile south of Santa Teresa.
Work affects both northbound and southbound lanes, with reduced speed limits throughout the project area.
Contractor working hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Deming to Hatch
NM 26
Drivers traveling between Deming and Hatch should expect daytime lane closures and pilot-car operations along NM 26 from US 180 near Deming toward mile marker 46 in Hatch.
Crews are performing crack sealing, fog sealing and installing centerline rumble strips.
Work is scheduled from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with possible weekend work.
NMDOT says the centerline rumble strips are part of its Target Zero initiative and are intended to alert motorists who drift across the centerline, helping reduce head-on and crossover crashes.
Luna County
Chip seal operations continue on roads in the Deming area.
Drivers should expect flaggers, pilot vehicles and temporary stops. Loose gravel may remain on road surfaces for several days after treatment, and center striping may be absent until work is completed.
Crews are currently fog sealing:
- Various I-10 frontage roads in the Akela area
- NM 418 between mileposts 10 and 12, along Old Lordsburg Highway
Work is scheduled Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
I-25 Near Truth or Consequences
Road reconstruction continues along I-25 between mile markers 75 and 85, from Williamsburg to Cuchillo.
Lane closures will affect northbound and southbound traffic as crews perform guardrail replacement, milling and paving.
Speed limits are reduced through the project area. Work is scheduled 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with possible weekend work.
Traveling to El Paso
I-10 Widening West: Phase 2
Nighttime closures are scheduled along the I-10 corridor near Anthony and Vinton this week while crews set barriers.
Monday, Sept. 14, and Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.:
South Desert between Anthony and Vinton will be fully closed.
Wednesday, Sept. 16, and Thursday, Sept. 17, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.:
North Desert between Vinton and Anthony will be fully closed.
Borderland Expressway
From Monday, Sept. 14, through Friday, Sept. 18, alternating lane closures are scheduled on US 54 eastbound and westbound between Mesquite Hills and McCombs.
Mesquite Hills will be reduced to one lane between US 54 and Red Man Drive, with flaggers directing traffic as needed for haul trucks.
Additional flagging operations are planned at McCombs and Stan Roberts.
Crews will be performing bridge work and transporting earth embankment into the project.
Coming Sept. 24: I-10 at Artcraft
A full nighttime closure of I-10 eastbound and westbound between Transmountain and Artcraft is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 24, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Crews will be placing the deck for the southbound-to-northbound turnaround bridge.
Coming Sept. 28: Chaparral
The resumption of road construction on NM 213 and NM 404 is now scheduled for Monday, Sept. 28.
NMDOT had previously listed Sept. 21 as the restart date.
During Phase 1, expected to last approximately eight months through April or May 2027, crews will work on the west frontage road of NM 213, construct temporary detour pavement between the new bypass route and NM 404, and begin construction of the flyover.
Regular work hours are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, although longer hours and weekend work are possible.
NMDOT expects the entire project to take approximately 21 months, continuing through summer 2028.
White Sands Missile Range
Drivers who may be affected by White Sands Missile Range road closures can call 575-678-1178 or 575-678-2222 for current closure information.
