Las Cruces Fire Division Chief Achieves Fire Marshal Professional Designation

Earning the Fire Marshal designation reflects a continued commitment to professional excellence and to the evolving responsibilities of the modern fire service.

The Las Cruces Fire Department proudly recognizes Division Chief Michael Landavazo, who has more than 20 years serving our community, for successfully completing the Fire Marshal Professional Designation through the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE) and its Commission on Professional Credentialing (CPC).

This achievement represents a significant professional milestone for Chief Landavazo and LCFD. He is the first Fire Marshal in the history of the LCFD to achieve the CPSE Fire Marshal Professional Designation and is one of only three active Fire Marshal credentialed Chief Officers in the State of New Mexico. All three serve in Doña Ana County.

The CPSE process is designed to recognize career excellence and a commitment to continuous improvement within the fire and emergency services. Unlike traditional certification, professional designation evaluates the broader body of an officer’s career accomplishments through a peer-review process. The CPC model considers areas including education, experience, professional development, technical competence, professional contributions and recognition, professional memberships and affiliations, and community involvement.

Earning the Fire Marshal designation reflects a continued commitment to professional excellence and to the evolving responsibilities of the modern fire service. The Fire Marshal role extends well beyond code enforcement. It encompasses fire prevention, community risk reduction, fire investigation, development and construction review, public education, regulatory compliance, and working with the community and development partners to reduce risk before an emergency occurs.

The accomplishment also reflects positively on the department as LCFD continues to build organizational capacity around community risk reduction, fire prevention, professional development, and data-informed decision-making. CPSE identifies professional credentialing as a mechanism for strengthening individual development while fostering professionalism and excellence throughout the fire and emergency services profession.
